Climate Alpine

Interview with Thierry Lim
Have you ever thought about how climate change may impact Swiss mountains?

Yes, I often think about how climate change may negatively impact natural processes that may be important to humans. For example, the Swiss mountains are known for their glaciers, which are very important for water supply. Because these glaciers melt due to climate change, these natural processes are impacted. This causes reduced mountain water availability during summer months when glaciers and mountain water are used a lo

Have you personally noticed any impacts of climate change in the Swiss mountains?
Yes, glaciers melt more annually now then they used to and snow melts more on swiss mountains. Due to climate change natural creatures and animals may have to adapt however as climate change is happening at such an alarming rate and it may be hard for animals to adapt fast

What impact does the melting of glaciers have on water resources in Switzerland?
The melting of glaciers over time results in an excess of unclean water which makes reservoirs run out and requires more natural resources and processes to be used.
What impact might Climate change have on local communities and people?
It may impact natural resources that impact the consumption and the usage that local communities and people rely on. This may result in deficits in certain categories of industry and living
How have local communities in the Swiss mountains adapted to the changes brought by climate change?
For hunting people in the region have to limit and plan how many animals they kill per season. Local communities have also used more natural resources and are more resourceful and responsible with the resources they use. For example people have switched from bottled water into local spring water and they reuse boxes and plastic as much as possible.
How has climate change impacted mountain water in Switzerland?
Due to climate change glaciers melt faster which requires more natural resources and processes to be used. This causes more non-renewable resources to be used.
